Bees have extremely sensitive olfactory receptors that can sense volatile compounds in the range of parts per billion to even parts per trillion. This ability makes them ideal for detection of VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) that might be present in the environment in extremely low quantities.
We have developed a device that allows the utilization of bees in detecting specific VOCs. Training of multiple bees for differentiating volatiles can be performed within a few minutes, while detection takes a few seconds. It is a cost-effective solution that makes disease-diagnosis affordable.
BeeSense is ideal for detection of novel diseases (such as COVID-19). They can differentiate between asymptomatic and symptomatic cases from healthy people within few seconds.
