Technical Development Engineer

APPLICATION DEADLINE: 01 November 2026
STARTING DATE: as soon as possible

About the role

We are developing ReceptomiX, a platform combining synthetic biology, microfluidics, optics and machine learning for the readout of receptor responses. This is a lab instrument technology that will help pharma and flavor-food companies to do their R&D faster and better than the conventional way. So if you want to apply your engineering skills and mindset in an impactful way, this vacancy is for you.

What you will do

Contribute to designing and building prototypes and MVPs (minimum viable product) from concept to working device
3D-model parts in CAD software and prepare them for 3D printing or CNC machining
Assemble electromechanical systems: wiring, soldering, sensor integration, PCB work
Set up and run experiments to validate prototype performance and document results clearly
Help integrate microfluidic components with electronics and software
Maintain the workshop: keep tools, components, and inventory organised
Iterate quickly, break things, fix them, keep learning and sharing them

Must-have skills

Degree in Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or a closely related field (applied university or university)
Solid CAD skills (Fusion 360, SolidWorks, or equivalent) and experience with 3D printing
Hands-on electronics and mechanics skills, and capable of assembling, integration and executing tasks independently
Strong problem-solving mindset, you enjoy taking things apart and figuring out why they don't work
Taking responsibility for your work
Good written and spoken English

Nice to have

•  KiCad / Eagle / Altium for custom PCBdesign
•  Experience with sensor integration (optical, electrochemical, gas sensors)
•  Familiarity with image processing, computer vision, or signal processing
•  Familiarity with microfluidics
•  Dutch language skills
•  Background in regulated environments (medical devices)

Who you are

Eligible to work in the EU (we cannot offer sponsorship)
Curious and self-driven, you learn new tools fast because you want to, not because you have to
Hands-on by nature; you'd rather build a rough prototype today than perfect a design for two months
Comfortable with ambiguity; deep-techMVPs rarely come with clear specs
Organized enough to document your work so others can build on it
Collaborative; you'll work closely with other engineers, biologists, biotech experts, software engineers, commercial team and the founders

What we offer

Direct involvement in building technology in a fast-growing deep-tech startup, that was awarded as one of the top 20 academic startups of the Netherlands in 2024-2025 and has been covered by global news like The Economist, National Geographic, and Business Insider
Real ownership of prototypes from day one
Competitive salary of €3,800–€4,600 gross per month for 36h/week, depending on experience, and 8% holiday allowance
Room to grow into a more senior engineering role as the company scales up
